Under the darkness of a total solar eclipse\, George Rogers Clark and his small force of militiamen set out on their bold expedition to capture the British posts in the Illinois Country. A year later\, Clark returned to the Falls where he established headquarters. \n\n\n\nIn the year that marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, discover how George Rogers Clark and his men utilized the Falls of the Ohio as a strategic command post on the frontier that developed into the city of Louisville during the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nPresented by Gina Possanza. Gina Possanza serves as the Imaging Specialist and on-staff George Rogers Clark historian for the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution headquarters in Louisville\, KY. A dedicated researcher of Clark\, she specializes in his Revolutionary War connection to the Falls of the Ohio and in the Illinois Land Grant. With 20 years of experience as a professional photographer and graphic artist\, she blends technical skills with historical expertise to preserve the history of the American Revolution through digitization.

SUMMARY:Falls Forum Lecture Series: “The Maiden Voyage of the NEW ORLEANS”
DESCRIPTION:Falls Forum is a monthly spring lecture series that examines the Falls of the Ohio region through interdisciplinary scholarship and public engagement. Featuring invited experts and researchers\, the series explores a broad range of topics including archaeology\, paleontology\, geology\, regional history\, and the natural sciences. Each lecture focuses on a rotating theme\, offering in-depth perspectives on the cultural\, ecological\, and geological forces that have shaped the Falls and peeks into the historic stories of the Falls. Designed for lifelong learners and curious minds of all backgrounds\, Falls Forum offers an opportunity to connect science\, history\, and place—deepening our understanding of the past while inspiring stewardship for the future. \n\n\n\n$7 program fee. Meets in the auditorium. Exhibit gallery admission included with price of the program. \n\n\n\n“The Maiden Voyage of the NEW ORLEANS” Presented by Kenneth Golliher \n\n\n\n The “NEW ORLEANS” was the first steamboat to travel from Pittsburgh to New Orleans on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.  The 1811 – 1812 voyage was delayed by low water at the Falls of the Ohio and threatened by a natural disaster.  Even though the only major ports of call were Cincinnati (pop 750)\, Louisville (1350)\, and Natchez (1500)\, the voyage took almost three months with the bulk of the non-traveling time spent in Louisville.  Without exaggeration\, it is hard to say whether it is the boat or Lydia Latrobe Roosevelt (the captain’s wife)\, who is the story’s heroine.  Both set new standards.  Either way\, the tale is the foundation for the Falls Cities’ river heritage.   Please come join us to hear one of the best river sagas of all. \n\n\n\nPresented by Kenneth W. Golliher. Mr. Golliher is a retired business owner with an extensive background in training and research and a recently cultivated interest in history and storytelling. He sits on the board of the Louisville Historical League\, volunteers as a docent at Historic Locust Grove\, and is an instructor for Veritas\, Bellarmine College and OLLI\, University of Kentucky.

SUMMARY:Sand Island Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:This August\, Ohio River Way and River City Paddle Sports are teaming up with local partners\, including Falls of the Ohio Foundation\, to celebrate the recent designation of the Ohio River Way as a National Water Trail by giving back to the river that connects us all. This collaborative effort brings together paddlers\, conservationists\, and community members for a hands-on adventure in stewardship and celebration\, honoring the Ohio River as a treasured and trail-worthy natural resource. Volunteers can sign up for a seat in one of our 30-foot voyageur canoes—15 spots are available each day and may fill quickly. You’re also encouraged to bring your own paddle craft or motorboat to join the cleanup. If you bring your own boat\, you’ll be responsible for its transport and we ask that you help transport trash back to the boat ramp. Whether you’re in a voyageur canoe or your own boat\, please sign up using the link so we can provide enough shirts and cleanup supplies for everyone! \n\n\n\nFalls of the Ohio Foundation is supporting the Sand Island Cleanup on August 24th but there are 3 other volunteer opportunities to clean up Ohio River islands. Please feel free to choose the one that fits best with your schedule.
