U.S. Life Saving Station #10  was installed by the U.S> Life Saving Service on the banks of the Ohio River in 1881.  This was the only inland life saving station in the United States.  It was located on the most hazardous place on the river, the Falls of the Ohio.  Having been in existence for 18 months, the first Coast Guard fatality during a rescue attempt occurred on June 27, 1916.  On that day, two young men floating down the Ohio River were unable to avoid the strong currents and were carried over the dam and the Falls below.

In the course of the efforts made to save these men, Coast Guard Boatman John A. Munz drowned and five crew narrowly escaped his fate.   Boatman Munz will be honored at a ceremony starting at noon in the Auditorium of the Interpretive Center.  The public is invited.
