The History of Limestone Mining Near the Falls

The history of the limestone industry in southern Indiana is a long one. Historian and Naturalist at Heart volunteer Chuck Lewis will discuss the uses of limestone, lime, concrete, and cement. He will talk about the company town of Speed, Indiana, the involvement of the Speed family (especially Joshua Speed) in the local limestone industry as well as lime kilns in Utica, Indiana. This program will be held in the auditorium and is free with regular Interpretive Center admission. Social distancing required.
