In all the world, there is no other place like the Falls of the Ohio. The Falls’ fossil beds are the largest exposed Devonian era fossil beds in the world, creating a unique crossroads of nature and history which must be shared, enjoyed, and preserved for future generations.
Since 1987, the Falls of the Ohio Foundation has worked towards our vision of “a connected region that stewards our natural landscapes and historical stories.” Our organization has supported millions of dollars in investments and improvements at the Falls of the Ohio State Park, provided free educational experiences for thousands of area youth, and support the exploration of this beautiful landscape through events, programs, and activations.

The mission of The Falls of the Ohio Foundation, Inc. (the Foundation) is “to inspire a sense of wonder in the Falls of the Ohio region through education, preservation, and exploration.” Our vision is “a connected region that stewards our natural landscapes and historical stories.”
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the President of the Board of Directors and the Board, the Executive Director is responsible for the Foundation achieving its mission (see above). The Executive Director fulfills this function through the following Essential Duties & Responsibilities and Job Competencies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Fundraising (about 60% of the work) – Establish and lead the Foundation to meet its annual fundraising goals including all budgeted items, salaries, programs, events, and projects.
- Creates, leads, and manages the Foundation’s overall development plan and efforts to meet its annual fundraising goals.
- Cultivates and nurtures relationships with current and potential foundation, corporate, government, and individual donors, with a focus on major gifts.
- Writes grant proposals and reports to foundation, corporate, government, and individual donors.
- Oversees and leads the Foundation’s membership program, with a focus on increasing individual and corporate members.
- Oversees the Foundation’s annual Rock the Rocks fundraiser and other fundraising initiatives.
- Establishes and implements long and short term fundraising goals.
- Assures that the Foundation has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
II. Administration (about 20% of the work)– Supervises all office and administrative functions. Assumes responsibility for the financial and physical assets of the organization, while delegating duties and projects in an effective and orderly manner.
- Financial reporting functions: Is responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices. Prepares and submits for Board approval the Foundation’s annual Capital and Operating budgets; ensures the organization operates within budget guidelines.
- Maintains official records and documents, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Establishes sound working relationships with and represents the Foundation to the staff of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), volunteers, community groups, and organizations.
- Oversees subordinate Foundation staff members and volunteers in an effective manner, using sound personnel practices.
- Ensures adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
- As approved by the Board, pursues special programs and projects.
III. Board Development (about 20% of the work)– Supports the Board in carrying out its governance, planning, and fundraising responsibilities.
- Carries out plans and policies authorized by the Board.
- Promotes active and broad Board participation in all areas of the Foundation’s work.
- Serves as staff liaison to all committees of the Board, with a focus on the Finance Committee.
- Ensures the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the Foundation and all important factors influencing it.
JOB COMPETENCIES:
- Displays high motivation and proactive skills, including strong and persuasive communication, leadership, interpersonal, and management skills.
- Proven ability to think and act strategically.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- A bachelor’s degree in administration, management, or a related field and at least 5 years of experience with increasing responsibility in a nonprofit fundraising environment. A master’s degree is preferred.
- A demonstrated track record for effective management and program organization, event planning, public relations and marketing, financial acumen, a passion for the Foundation’s mission, personal integrity, knowledge of the local philanthropic community, and an ability to identify and pursue major gift prospects.
- Must be able to use business software packages and applications within Microsoft Office. In depth knowledge and abilities in QuickBooks and fundraising database programs or a willingness to be trained and accountable.
- A combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted when competency in the role is demonstrated.
WORKING & PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
This work is performed in a business office setting at the Falls of the Ohio State Park Interpretive Center. Job duties also include the need to drive off-site for job-related meetings. Occasional travel in Indiana and the Louisville metropolitan area is required.
This position is primarily sedentary in nature and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. It requires the occasional lifting and/or carrying of small objects (no more than 10 lbs.). While mostly done sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is necessary.
Essential physical tasks include: Fingering (typing, keyboarding, etc.), Sitting (prolonged), Reaching (extending hands/ arms), Talking, Hearing, Repetitive Motion (of the wrists, hands, and/ or fingers), Walking, Grasping, and Visual Inspection (close).
Marginal physical tasks include: Stooping/Crouching, Standing, Pushing, Driving, Feeling, (perceiving attributes of objects by touch), Pulling, and Lifting (raising and/ or moving objects)
Additional tasks: Must have good communication, cognitive, and persuasive abilities in order to interact with donors, prospects, staff, board members, DNR staff, and volunteers. Is able to work with detailed information. Must maintain tolerance for fast-paced and stressful work.
MACHINES, TOOLS, & EQUIPMENT:
This position requires the operation of the office computer, printer, fax machine, copy machine, telephone, camera, and vehicle.
PAY SCALE:
$80,000 – $130,000 based on experience level.
