“It’s one of the most ambitious and visionary recreational trails in the U.S. and it’s on both land and water. The Ohio River Recreation Trail will stretch 274 miles from Portsmouth, OH to West Point, KY, facilitating both long distance and local paddling, power boating, sailing, fishing and bicycling along the Ohio River. Major cities Cincinnati and Louisville are on the route, and the Falls of the Ohio is an important feature. The self guided trail connects people with special places. Outdoor recreation adventures, restaurants, bed and breakfast establishments and retail shopping opportunities awaits those travelling on the Ohio River Recreation Trail whether on land or water. The trail will promote tourism and economic development, reveal the unique history, culture and beauty of the Ohio River valley, and promote environmental awareness and respect for lands and waters with a “Leave No Trace ” ethic.
The Ohio River Recreation Trail has been awarded technical assistance from the National Park Service’ Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, and will be recognized as a National Water Trail. Having both the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail and a National Water Trail readily accessible at the Falls of the Ohio is quite an honor. The Ohio River Recreation Trail will add to the many recreational, educational and economic benefits that this special place – the Falls of the Ohio – has to offer.
